Climate-tech startup Verta Bioenergy raises $845k

Verta Bioenergy, a Singapore-headquartered climate-tech startup, announced a S$1.1-million ($845,000) seed funding from multiple investors, including ENGIE Factory, Wright Partners, AlphaGen VC, Auravia Capital, and Jun Umali from the Manila Angel Investors Network (MAIN).

The fresh capital will be deployed to launch Verta’s first commercial-scale manufacturing plant, with a production capacity of 12,000 tonnes per year. It is also developing a solar-powered drying system to further improve energy efficiency.

Verta was originally co-created with ENGIE Factory, Wright Partners, and Ming Labs, and incubated under EDB’s corporate venturing programme, Corporate Venture Launchpad (CVL). It focuses on transforming agricultural waste into high-quality biomass pellets that serve as a seamless, cost-competitive drop-in replacement for coal.

Aside from equity funding, the company also secured over $10 million in Letters of Intent (LOIs) with leading multinationals and is closing its first contracts.

Snack maker Mamame bags $2m funding from Granite Asia

Mamame Whole Foods (Mamame), a Singapore-headquartered tempeh snack brand, has received $2 million in funding from Granite Asia. Allen & Gledhill acted as the transaction counsel, while AGI Legal advised Granite Asia on Indonesian law aspects.

Founded by Alvina Chun and Liz Kang, Mamame is a family-run company bringing Indonesia’s centuries-old superfood, tempeh, into the modern snacking scene. The brand has transformed tempeh into crispy, protein-rich chips, made from black-eyed peas, tapioca flour, coconut oil, and a natural fermenting culture that gives tempeh its signature flavour and nutrition.

Headquartered in Singapore with a factory in Indonesia, Mamame’s products are available in 10 countries, including the US market, by late 2024. It can be found in premium supermarkets and online stores around the world.
