Xiaolu Biomedicine has secured “several tens of millions” of US dollars in its angel financing round led by healthcare-focused investment firms YuanBio Venture Capital and TTM Capital.
The round has roped in several notable investors, including the likes of Oriza Holdings, GL Ventures (affiliated with Hillhouse Capital Group), Suzhou Capital Group, and Zhongguancun Life Science Park, among others, according to a company release on June 17.
Founded in early 2025 by renowned immunologist and former global R&D head of global healthcare firm Sanofi, Yongjun Liu, the Suzhou-based firm focuses on developing safe and efficient next-generation therapeutics for autoimmune and inflammatory disorders.
The fresh funding comes at a time when China’s biopharma sector has transformed beyond its past as a generic drug maker, as big pharma licensing deals ride on a tailwind in China.
Licensing deals for Chinese drug candidates hit a record high in 2024, with large pharma in-licensing 28% of innovator drugs from Chinese biopharma firms. The total deal value of the licensing agreements surged 66% from $16.6 billion in 2023 to $41.5 billion in 2024, signifying a five-year high, according to data firm GlobalData.
Venture funding into Chinese biotech firms has shown signs of recovery. DealStreetAsia’s proprietary data shows that $328.2 million was raised across a total of 23 biotech firms in China in Q1 2025. The quarterly proceeds were up by 67.9% from a year ago, when $195.5 million was raised across 23 deals in the same period in 2024.
