Robinhood, the US retail trading platform that helped reshape equity investing for a generation of first-time traders, announced that it is entering Indonesia by acquiring local brokerage firm Buana Capital Sekuritas and licensed digital asset trader Pedagang Aset Kripto.
The announcement confirms DealStreetAsia’s report in November that said Robinhood was laying the groundwork for an expansion into Southeast Asia, through Indonesia.
“Indonesia represents a fast-growing market for trading, making it an exciting place to further Robinhood’s mission to democratize finance for all,” said Patrick Chan, Head of Asia at Robinhood.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Per the announcement, Pieter Tanuri, the majority owner of Buana Capital and PT Pedagang Aset Kripto, will stay on as a strategic advisor to Robinhood.
Buana Capital will continue to serve its brokerage customers with Indonesian financial products, per the announcement.
“Over time, we hope to also offer Robinhood brokerage and crypto trading products and connect Indonesian customers to US equities, cryptocurrencies, and more at scale,” Robinhood said.
Founded in 2013, Robinhood has built its US reputation on commission-free stock trading and is extending its global presence as it courts younger, mobile-first users.
Listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange, Robinhood allows trading in stocks, ETFs, derivatives, and cryptocurrencies. It has served over 25 million customers worldwide.
Robinhood’s arrival in Indonesia could broaden access for overseas investors, deepen liquidity, and shine a brighter spotlight on Indonesian equities as policymakers seek to diversify and expand the investor base.
Indonesia has one of Asia’s fastest-expanding retail investor populations, backed by a government intent on deepening domestic participation in capital markets.
For Robinhood, breaking into Indonesia could serve as a global bridge between Western markets and the rising economies of Southeast Asia, market watchers say.
As of the end of October 2025, Indonesia’s capital market investor base reached 19 million Single Investor Identifications (SIDs). Of that, 4.28 million were new investors added this year, an increase of 58.4% compared to 2024. And, stock investors accounted for 8.08 million SIDs, up 51.2% year-to-date.
Buana Capital Sekuritas was founded in 1990 and, in 2010, was transferred to new owner Pieter Tanuri, who currently serves as president commissioner, through PT Philadel Terra Lestari. Tanuri is an entrepreneur who has held various positions in various companies.
PT Perdagangan Aset Kripto (Coinvest), on the other hand, was granted a license from OJK as a Digital Financial Asset Trader since October 2025, to provide a crypto exchange platform.
