The Australian government has invested A$50 million ($33 million) in a newly-launched fund to support investments in climate-related sectors in Indonesia.

The cornerstone commitment comes through the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG) under the Australia-Indonesia Climate and Infrastructure Partnership (KINETIK), PIDG said in a statement.

The fund, KINETIK Affirma Capital Climate Transition Fund I, will be managed by Singapore-based private equity firm Affirma Capital.

Affirma Capital will raise the rest of the fund’s corpus, targeted at $200 million, and is also expected to make a GP commitment to the vehicle.

The investments will provide growth capital for projects in climate-related sectors, including solar and hydropower energy, water and waste management, sustainable transport and logistics, and other tools and technologies supporting Indonesia’s energy transition.

In addition to being a limited partner in the fund, PIDG will also provide health, safety, environment and social guidance, together with impact screening, assessment, and monitoring on proposed investments.

The latest efforts follow PIDG’s climate financing initiatives in other countries in emerging Asia, including in Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka

KINETIK, or Kemitraan until Iklim, Energi Terbarukan dan Infrastructure, was launched in March last year after being first announced by former Indonesian president Joko Widodo and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The partnership is valued at A$200 million and is aimed at driving bilateral cooperation to cut emissions and promote energy transition in support of Indonesia’s net-zero goals. Efforts will include supporting Indonesia-led policy and regulatory reform in the energy sector, spurring financing in small- and medium-sized enterprises, and incentivising investment in larger-scale green energy infrastructure projects.

Other initiatives under KINETIK include skills development in areas such as sustainable finance and increasing remote communities’ access to renewable energy.
