AI companion toy maker Haivivi has snapped 200 million yuan ($28 million) in a Series A round roping in the likes of CICC Capital, HongShan (previously Sequoia Capital China), WestSummit Capital, and Joy Capital as the lead investors.
CMB International also joined the round as a participating investor, while existing backers including Brizan Ventures re-upped, according to a recent company release.
The proceeds will help the firm in new product R&D and talent and market channel expansion.
Founded in 2021, Shenzhen-based Haivivi taps into the nascent AI companion space which has already seen a couple of early-stage firms snapping funding from investors.
Most recently, AI-powered English-learning companion firm Qidian Lingzhi secured “several tens of millions yuan” in an angel funding round led by AI-focused Zhipu Ecosystem Fund (Z Fund). However, Qidian has yet to roll out any product yet.
Haivivi has so far snapped “several hundreds of millions yuan” since its inception. Its debut product BubblePal, a bubble-like device that can be hung around toys, has hit sales of over 200,000, according to the release.
The BubblePal device can interact with users to tell stories, or answer questions, with customisation and monitoring options available through a parent app.
While AI companions are on the rise, their growing use — particularly among children — has raised significant concerns.
“Many lack proper safety guardrails, with reports of companion bots encouraging violence against parents or dismissing a teen’s suicidal thoughts. Others have been found to adopt sexualised, minor-presenting personas or engage in role-play featuring sexualised minors”, researchers commented in a report published by UNICEF in July.
