Vietnam's CMC Corp to build $250m hyperscale data centre

Vietnamese tech firm CMC Corp has received the approval to build a $250-million hyperscale data centre in Ho Chi Minh City, according to an announcement.

Called “CMC Hyperscale DC SHTP,” the project is designed to be the “heart” for massive data storage, computation, and analytics, providing AI-as-a-Service, cloud infrastructure, big data, and cybersecurity services to millions of users.

A technological highlight is the Digital Twin system, which enables real-time simulation and operational monitoring, optimising the data centre’s overall performance.

The initial design capacity is 30 MW, expandable to 120 MW, ready to serve massive computing needs for AI development and the digital economy.

“We do not see the CMC Hyperscale Data Center SHTP as just a typical data centre. This is a foundational infrastructure for Ho Chi Minh City to grow into the region’s Digital Hub, a core backbone serving digital and AI transformation, where Vietnamese businesses can access the most powerful computing resources without sending their data abroad,” said Nguyen Trung Chinh – Chairman & Executive President of CMC Corporation.

“This is CMC Corporation’s concrete action to realise Resolution 57 on science & technology, innovation, and national digital transformation, as well as Resolution 68 on promoting the private sector’s role in the economy,” he added.

The escalating demand for AI is profoundly shaping data centre investment and expansion strategies in Vietnam, as global tech giants and local players vie to seize a share of this rapidly growing market.

Most recently, Reuters reported that Abu Dhabi state-backed firm G42 plans to partner with Vietnamese companies to develop a $2-billion hyperscale data centre in Vietnam’s business hub Ho Chi Minh City. The local partners include FPT Corp., investment firm VinaCapital, and Viet Thai Group.

Last year, Singapore-headquartered firm ST Telemedia Global Data Centres and Vietnam’s first unicorn VNG Corporation announced a strategic collaboration to develop and manage international standard data centres in the city.

In addition, Nvidia and the Vietnamese government jointly set up an AI research and development centre and an AI data centre under an agreement signed in December last year.
