SEA Digest: Basel to buy SG's Bethesda Medical; Indonesia's Surge bags NTT East investment

Basel Medical Group has agreed to acquire Singapore healthcare provider Bethesda Medical, while Indonesia’s Surge has agreed to an investment by Japan’s Nippon Telegraph and Telephone East.

Basel to buy Singapore’s Bethesda Medical

Nasdaq-listed Basel Medical Group announced that it has agreed to acquire Bethesda Medical, a Singapore-based diagnostic imaging and outpatient care provider, for an undisclosed amount.

The acquisition, which is carried out by Basel’s Singapore subsidiary Basel Medical Group Pte Ltd, is part of the group’s expansion strategy in Southeast Asia, per the announcement.

Basel Medical and Bethesda Medical had previously partnered on initiatives to enhance patient services and streamline operations. The completion of the acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions.

“This acquisition is a natural progression of our partnership with Bethesda Medical,” said Raymond Cheung, group CEO of Basel Medical Group.

Bethesda Medical operates in Singapore with a focus on community healthcare, offering diagnostic imaging and outpatient treatment backed by advanced medical technology.

Indonesia’s Surge secures investment from NTT East

Indonesian digital infrastructure provider Surge, formally known as Solusi Sinergi Digital, has secured investment from Japan’s Nippon Telegraph and Telephone East (NTT East), Nikkei Asia reported on Monday.

The investment agreement will see NTT East acquiring a 49% stake in fibre optics service provider Weave, a subsidiary of Surge, for an undisclosed amount, the report added.

Weave serves 200,000 households in Indonesia, mainly in the capital Jakarta. With the signing of the partnership and investment agreement, Surge and NTT East aim to expand the number of households served to 40 million.

The partners are considering providing artificial intelligence and other digital services to Indonesia customres, NTT East president Naoki Shibutani told Nikkei. Beyond the financial backing, NTT East will also help Weave train 2,000 line engineers annually.
