Japan’s $2 trillion Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF) posted a 5.25 trillion yen ($33.25 billion) investment loss in the July-September quarter and maintained its portfolio’s asset allocations, it said on Friday.
The loss contrasts sharply with a gain of 14.4 trillion yen over the same period a year previously. The Japanese government has discussed rethinking GPIF’s investment strategy this year to invest more heavily in domestic assets.
The total market value of its assets at the end of September was 319.8 trillion yen ($2.03 trillion).
GPIF’s basic portfolio policy maintains a roughly equal 25% weighting for each of its four principal asset classes – foreign stocks, domestic stocks, foreign bonds and domestic bonds – with permissible deviations of five to six percentage points.
